A film about the result of labor. It has a couple using their hard earned wages in search of furniture, citizens’ leisurely water skiing and fishing. BZV was shot in and around Brazzaville, The Republic of Congo. With a naturalistic approach, the film also interweaves various elements concerning the social and physical landscape. The title is the three-letter airport code for Brazzaville.

De aanzet voor The Island of St. Matthews kwam er toen ik jaren geleden op zoek was naar oude foto’s voor kunstenaarsboeken. In Mississippi vroeg ik mijn tante aan moederszijde: “Where are the old pictures and stuff like that?” Ze bleef herhalen: “Die zijn verloren gegaan bij de overstroming.” Daarom wilde ik altijd al een film maken over de Tombigbee-rivier die buiten haar oevers trad in 1973.
