Al-Sandawich schetst de dagelijkse leef- en werkomstandigheden van kinderen in Abnoud, een plattelandsdorp 600 km ten zuiden van Caïro waar de toeristentreinen richting het zuiden van Egypte doorheen passeren zonder halt te houden. Een jongen overstijgt er even zijn armoedig bestaan door met druppels geitenmelk een oud stuk brood in een speciale sandwich te transformeren.

“I believe film is a language I can use to say many things, a poem, a short story. I once made a film without a single word in it about one day in the life of children in the village of Abnoud. At lunch, you know, they take their bread and go to the cow’s udder for milk, just to have something on the bread! That’s how poor they are.”
