In the forest near Marseille, the Franco Vietnamese director Henriette Nhung is shooting Dangerous Liaisons with the help of her son Mike. But when the lead actor disappears, everything comes to a halt. The film looses its Valmont, and the director soon after. Behind her, she leaves the entire cast and crew, now passengers aboard a ghost ship with only the young Mike as captain. As she wanders the port city, Henriette discovers a world that reminds her of her former home, Vietnam. Here, she meets a man haunted by a long journey with no return.
“When I say that I’m not at all sure what All That She Surveys means, I’m not being disingenuous: the film remains fundamentally mysterious to me”. (GM) The idea and screenplay are by James Benning: a day in the life of a young woman (a beautiful role by Amy Seimetz). We see her successively survey her surroundings in a coffee house, become emotional at a tram stop, deep in thought on the tram and attentive in a museum. She looks and listens and takes in the world.
“Filmed in Grisaille with a sober eye, Alina Rudnitskaya’s I Will Forget This Day is a wrenching portrait of waiting young women, whose decisions are not always willfully made”. (Andréa Picard)
“In a Los Angeles interior, moving walls for loss. Practicing a song to a loved one. A film of the feminine structuring body.” (LL)
